Where did Topgolf come from and where are they now?

Topgolf has 100+ locations worldwide. Where did they come from, and what are some of the best international bucket list locations?

Topgolf originated in Watford, England (which is about 20 miles outside of London) in the year 2000. Two brothers set out to create a technology that would enhance your experience at a driving range. They wanted to use it for improving their golf game and answering the question, “Who hit it closer?”

They originally created Toptracer technology and implemented it into driving ranges in England. They saw the benefits of the technology and realized that many of their customers were non-golfers or families who enjoyed the atmosphere. They decided to broaden their focus to include everyone, not just golfers. They added a points system, games and later adopted food + beverage. They went international with, the opening of a Topgolf in Alexandria, Virginia, in the year 2005. Today they are headquartered in Dallas, Texas.

National and International

Currently, there are 92 locations in the United States and 12 outside of the USA, along with nine locations that have been announced and are under construction. That total’s 103 Topgolf locations. My wife visited the Oberhausen, DE, location while she was living in Germany. I lived close to the Washington D.C area and didn’t have time to golf at Topgolf, but visited the Washington D.C. location, along with playing at both of the Topgolf locations in Utah. 

Here are the top 10 international locations.

• 1.) Watford, UK. The OG. This was the very first Topgolf, which opened its doors in 2000. It features an adventurous 18-hole mini golf course. They recently added 20+ new arcade machines and gaming systems. It is a no brainer when you are visiting to stop by and check out the home of Topgolf.
• 2.) Chigwell, UK. Launched in 2004, this is Topgolf’s second-oldest location and is situated next to Woolston Manor Country Club. A great place for hosting birthdays, corporate gatherings and social events. This location also has a mini golf course to keep the group entertained. As with other locations, it offers a bar and tableside food service.

• 3.) Dubai, UAE. This is the busiest Topgolf in the world and early in the year 2024, it broke records for the most golf balls hit worldwide in a single month. Along with stunning views it sits close to Emirates Golf Club which hosts a yearly European Tour event.
• 4.) Gold Coast, AUS. You will find this gem about 61km (38mi) outside of Brisbane. This is the farthest Topgolf is from their headquarters in the United States, showing just how popular Topgolf has become. It is one of Topgolf’s most scenic locations. People who visit talk about other attractions located close by such as Warner Bros Movie World and Wet’n’Wild waterpark.
• 5.) Bangkok, THA. Topgolf’s largest location in Southeast Asia. They offer games for all skill levels and ages. With 102 hitting bays, authentic Thai street food, five restaurants, an 18-hole putting course, and situated next to a massive mall; it is easy to see why this location is so popular.
• 6.) Vienna, AUT. Located near a plethora of shopping centers and among one of the newer locations, it has quickly become a hotspot for a good time. With themed nights, music events, and delicious food. Many of the people who visit love the sport and food-filled activities.

• 7.) Oberhausen, GER. One of the most popular Topgolf venues in Europe. You will find a lively atmosphere here with local food and beer. They have a stunning rooftop bar which overlooks CentrO, one of Europe’s largest shopping malls. Die Stimmung ist wirklich angenehm und es gibt fast keine so schöne Ausblicke. • 8.) Monterrey, MEX. A perfect place for non-golfers and families. This Topgolf location emphasis social gatherings, whether it is family or friends, you will want to visit. Combining classic Mexican cuisine with music, it is a vibrant Topgolf to visit.
• 9.) Wuhan, CHN. In the middle of Mainland China. This is probably the coolest and most unique location. They have interactive VR (Virtual Reality) along with classic Chinese hospitality. There aren’t many places like this in China, so it is one of a kind. A fantastic place to visit while traveling or even if you live there.
• 10.) Jakarta, IND. Designed to bring in the younger generation, equipped with social gaming, festive food, music and community events. As they say in Indonesia, “nongkrong” which means “to hang out” or “chill.”
